HOSIERY SALE Where the Battle is to be Fought. We have earnestly opposed Cleveland in the past, but in poli- ti is it is the present and the future that count. If the Democratic party is to survive it must begin to win presidential elections. Would it be better to win with Cleveland or lose with some figure head whom Bryan may set up? What say the rock-ribbed Demo cracy of the Middle West? If the ' East, where the real battle ground will be, demand him for the leader, shall we fall in line?—Cincinnati Inquirer. Too Ambitious. Some month ago Bishop Smith, of the Southern Methodist Church, located in Charlotte. The Char lotte folks were highly pleased to have a real live bishop “in their midst,” and their suprise and dis appointmentcan be imagined when Bishop Smith left Charlotte a few days ago and it was announced that he would hereafter make his home in Norfolk, Va. Behind The Value of Petitions. In the pardon of Murrow, Gov ernor Aycock says there was peti tion of three thousand signers pre sented to him. A wag here once wrote a petition asking that Mr. Jesse H. Lindsay; one of the most honored citizens of the State, be hanged, and twenty-six men signed it before its contents were known. Holmes, the undersigned executors will ex pose to public auction at the court house door in the city of Salisbury, on Monday, July 6.h, 1903, at 12 M. the following described real estate and personal property belonging to said es tate, v.z: Eight shares of stock in the North Caroli na Railroad Company belonging to the late Reuben J. Holmes, the certificate to which has been lost. Also the following described real estate lying in Rowan county and described as fol lows: One tract lying in Franklin township be ginning at a stone Jacob’s corner in Fester- man’s line, thence north 7.30 east with Jac ob’s line 23.80 chains to a stone in Swicegood’s ine, thence south 56 deg west with Macedon Josey’s line 15.63 chains to a vine knot Ken- nerly’s corner, thence south with Kennerly’s line 4.75 chains to a stone Kennerly’s corner, thence south 30 deg west with Kennerly’s line 1.98 chains to a stone Ker nerly’s corner, thence south with Kennerly’s line7.95 chains to a red oak stump Kennerly’s corner, thence north 85 east 7.35 chains to a stone at this is an interesting story. The Charlotte papers say that two well- known Methodist ministers in this State are consumed with a desire to get a job as bishop. These preachers and their friends, there fore, were not pleased with Bishop Smith’s locating in North Carolina —he is not a North Corolinian. They thought the fact that the State had a resident bishop would operate to defeat the ambition of the preachers aforesaid. Bishop Smith found out the situation and departed rather than be a disturb ing element. But it is probable that the would be bishops and their friends have overreached them selves and this incident may de stroy whatever chance of promo tion they may have had.— States ville Landmark. It is safe to say that it took six 1 months to get these 3,000 signers to ask tor the pardon of Murrow. The Record undertakes to say that it can get 3,000 signers to a petition in six weeks condeming Governor Aycock’s action in the matter, and what is more, the list will contain the best element of the county, with not a non resident on it.— Greensboro Record. ■ TO-LO-TAN CURES CATARRH. Don’t forget the days-Thurs- deluded and lost lie scattered over the hot scorching sands of king credits’ desert wastes. Right there is the cemetery where lie ambitions’ jeweled babes. It is the common end of the haughty rich and the lowly poor. The bloated bondholder and the heaving struggling ranks of poverty, the con queror and the conquered go hand in hand marching to defeat in its depths of ruin.
